When You Create a Character and Completely Fall in Love With Who He’s Becoming

One of the most exciting things about writing is watching a character develop into someone far more interesting than you originally imagined.

And let me tell you, I’ve been having an absolute blast developing one of my newest characters for my Z.E.R.O. book series!

What started as a simple character idea has turned into something I never expected.

I thought I’d spend a little time figuring out his background, personality, history, and motivations.

You know, just the basics.

HA! Famous last words.

Several hours later, this character has an entire life history, a complicated past, a fascinating personality, and enough background material to practically fill another book.

And the crazy part?

I HAVEN’T EVEN FINISHED BOOK ONE! 😂

I’m supposed to be working on chapters, developing investigations, and getting my first novel finished.

But apparently, my imagination had other plans.

This character has become one of my absolute favorites, and I am genuinely amazed at how much depth he’s developed.

And when I say I’ve fallen in love with this character, I mean as a writer! I love who he is, what makes him different, the challenges he’s faced, and the possibilities his story brings to the Z.E.R.O. universe.

There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating someone from scratch and watching all those little details come together until they feel like a believable person.

Of course, there’s also the ridiculous side of being an author.

You give a character a difficult past, spend hours figuring out everything they’ve endured, and then find yourself feeling sorry for them.

WHO DID THIS TO YOU?!

Oh, right.

ME.

I’M THE AUTHOR. 😭

And just when I think I’ve finished developing one part of his background, another idea comes along.

Then another.

And another.

At this point, my brain isn’t even running on coffee anymore. It’s running on fictional character development and complete creative chaos.

The funniest part is that I started this whole process thinking I was creating a supporting character.

Now I’m looking at the amount of background material I’ve developed and wondering whether this character is quietly trying to claim an entire book for himself.

SIR, PLEASE TAKE A NUMBER. BOOK ONE IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION! 🤣

But seriously, this is one of the things I love most about creating the Z.E.R.O. universe.

The characters don’t have to remain simple names on a page. They can have histories, personalities, motivations, fears, and experiences that make them feel like individuals.

And when all those pieces start fitting together, it’s incredibly exciting.

I’m not ready to reveal everything about this particular character just yet. There are mysteries I want readers to discover for themselves.

But I will say this:

I am absolutely thrilled with how he’s developing, and I can’t wait to introduce him properly.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a first book to finish before this character convinces my imagination to start writing the second one.

Being an author is exhausting.

Especially when your own characters refuse to wait their turn. 💜
